Day 8 – Visual recipe

04-2013-11-10 20.29.43

I prepared apple pie. Though I did not explain visually here I would like to explain in writing.

8 apples – peeled & sliced
2 tablespoons unsalted butter – chilled and sliced
1 1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
3 tablespoons flour

2 1/2 cups All Purpose flour
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 sticks of butter, cold & cubed
1/4 – 1/2 cup ice water
Cinnamon sugar for dusting
Preheat oven to 400ºF
Combine the flour, salt, sugar. Add in the butter and slowly gradually add the ice water.Mix until dough just comes together.  Don’t overwork the dough or it will make a tough crust.

Cut into two equal sections. Pat sections into discs and wrap in plastic wrap and place into refrigerator. Chill for 1 hour.  (can be frozen for future use)

In a small mixing bowl, combine cinnamon, sugar & flour, set aside.  In a large mixing bowl, add the peeled and sliced apples.  Sprinkle spice and flour mixture over apples.  Toss to coat.

Remove one chilled disc of dough from the refrigerator and roll out on a lightly floured surface, large enough to cover your pie pan.  Shape to fit, cutting off any excess.

Pour apple mixture into pie pan and add your sliced butter to the top of the mixture. Remove second dough disk from refrigerator and roll out large enough to fit the top of your pie with an overhang. Place pie dough on top of apple mixture and crimp edges to seal. With a knife, add four slits to your piecrust. Sprinkle liberally with cinnamon sugar.
Place onto a baking tray into preheated oven for approximately 50 minutes or until golden brown & bubbly. Allow pie to rest until cool before slicing. Refrigerate any uneaten portions.

Whisk 3 3/4 cups flour and 1 1/2 teaspoons salt. Make a well and add 1 1/3 cups warm water, 1 tablespoon sugar and 1 packet yeast. When foamy, mix in 3 tablespoons olive oil; knead until smooth, 5 minutes. Brush with olive oil, cover in a bowl and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour 30 minutes
Spread the dough into desired size and spread the tomato sauce onto it. Then put the toppings of your like say tomato, green and red peppers, spinach, olive slices and mushroom.

Keep the pizza in pizza pan and bake until the cheese melts or till golden brown, about 35 minutes.

Day 7 – Paper world

02-2013-11-10 18.42.00-1

I did not understand when Ravi told about the paper world. I just imagined the collage work representing our lives. But when we saw the assignments uploaded by some of classmates I got an rough idea about it. I visualized myself in this country between the skyscrapers and Ravi leading me in his car. I like the street-lights, so I didn’t want to miss it 😉

Day 6 – Portrait

01-2013-11-10 15.39.41

Portrait of Ravi, drew first time and it is nice 🙂 I don’t say I have drawn nicely but it was nice try for the first timer. But the self portrait was bad. I cannot draw myself and have to take some classes !09-2013-11-10 18.45.59

I need to work on the facial drawing more 😉

Day 6 – Paper world

Assignment was to create our own world in paper.

I had no idea how I would do anything for this assignment. But was kind of happy with what I ended up doing. Of course I have to add, wife was a great help ..and looking at others’ assignments also helped a lot.

Paper art is hard. Just like all other arts 🙂

Our living room pretty much looks like that..with some more stuff.

I had good fun while creating collage too 🙂

Day 5 – Sketches

The assignment was to have a sketch of myself drawn by me and one by my friend. First time ever sketching, I still used an old photograph as reference. I look so angry ! I wanted to use the newly bought crayons and used them. This is the assignment I submitted.11-2013-11-10 15.37.24

This was an earlier attempt .. haha. 14-2013-11-10 11.41.46

And according to the assignment, my friend (wife !) drew this of me 🙂  Actually our assignments are little bit cheating. Design is about people and the class requires us to approach new people or to ask a friend..we conveniently drew each other.

And finally, for wife’s assignment, here is what I drew (I referenced a caricature drawn by an artist).. I liked to color and am fairly happy with my work.

I am not adding another attempt that went too bad. Oh boy, it is so hard to make people laugh/smile in a sketch !

Breaking Bad

Many couples have a ‘couple song’ or a ‘couple movie’ – or atleast that’s what I have heard in stories and movies. Well, we didn’t have one which we could recognize as a ‘couple movie’.

However, as unromantic as it could get, ‘Breaking Bad’ could be as close as it gets to be identified as our ‘couple TV series’. I had watched couple of seasons before wedding, but I had to stop during wedding preparation (and during creation of this site). I also knew I couldn’t anyways complete the series before wedding and I would anyways plan to watch the whole series, it would just not be right for wife to catch up from middle of the series.

So I rewatched the whole series (with wife) starting somewhere around March/April and spent hours watching this series. There were couple of seasons that were my first time too. Some nights on weekends we would binge watch. And thus we finished watching all episodes so far, in time to watch the grand finale series this year. I also set a target to buy a LED TV before the end of this series. In particular, after the move, I had to subscribe to cable to be able to watch Breaking Bad, and so I did , only for 2 months – just enough to cover this.

Sometimes I like devoting extra resources towards a particular fascination – not because it deserves, but I just like doing things in the pretext of something.

Reading innumerable articles, gossips, interviews, etc, we prepared for the grand finale to do justice to what’s being called one of the finest series ever on TV, but more importantly my first complete non-Indian TV series watching. I was never into TV earlier in my life, and I may have caught some episodes of some series here and there, but I don’t recall watching any in full. And I picked this.

I almost wanted to write up a review of this series, the moral conflicts and differences of opinions between me and my wife..but this series has already consumed too much time ! Time to rest it.

Falling water

One of my BE friends called up and asked if I was available for a day to meet-up. I was thinking it would be his engagement in CA, which was a little too far to travel and, in a day ! But thankfully, he was visiting PA and I would only have to make a drive for couple of hours, I readily agreed.

We are always looking for places to visit (not that we have run out of, in this beautiful PA) but it was all the more good when Krishna himself picked a spot which was a famous tourist place – which was, although on my list a while ago, I had totally forgotten about it. There are only so many weekends..

It had started getting cold and we had kind of stopped going outdoors, but it wasn’t too bad on 29th Sept. We reached there little past noon, and soon after Krishna and his parents joined. We had a tour of the architectural wonder of a house created decades ago, literally above/on a waterfall. The water flows beneath the house.

It was good meeting Krishna’s parents too. After some photoshoot and quick bite, we returned home. Krishna and his parents made a brief visit on their way back.

And then it was a final episode of Breaking Bad. More about that later.

Day 4 – Food

Assignment was to cook our favorite recipe and submit a picture.

Day 4 - Food

Bisibelebath is one of the popular dishes from Karnataka. Something easy to make and helped me battle hunger during my bachelor days at school.

I followed recipe on the cover of MTR Bisibelebath powder package, however here is a simpler one:
